1944 April 22 “I am happier than I have been for many months”

Undated, but believed to be 4/22/44 Italy #96

Hi Honey:

God, I wish you were here.  Outside of that one thing, I am happier than I have been for many months.

The Section Exec, with whom I live, is a former enlisted man.  He reminds me in many ways of Sgt. Joe Landry, my Section Chief in the 48th.  That means he is tops.

I haven’t really done anything yet but get acquainted.  This is easy as everyone is so damn nice.  Instead of feeling like an intruder, you are made to feel like long lost brothers.

The set-up is not without flies in the ointment, but they are relatively unnoticed.

I found out last night that had communications not wanted me, I should been first in another section.  I think I have found the right job.

Well, kitten, time for breakfast.  Wish you could kiss me good-bye when I leave for the office!

Me.

Gremlin:

I messed up the date again.

As I have already written once today, this will be short.  As you can see from the papers on Van, there were a lot of things which I could not write last year.  Undoubtedly John has told you a good deal more.  I hope so, for then you will be better able to understand some of my letters.  I shall mail money direct to bank when possible.

I wrote some dope on the money a few weeks back.  In case that doesn’t come through, I shall give you full dope later.  In the meantime, pay the income taxes as they come due.  Although I think I can get home in 44, there is nothing that indicates that such is the case.  In spite of all the articles on what to do after the war, the people back there better realize that it can be a 10 year affair easily.  I don’t expect it to be, but such is possible.  Just count on seeing me when I get off the train.  There are many ramifications to this going home business, as Col Thompson would have said.  Also, the Army doesn’t move on newspaper reports.

I was afraid you would get tired of Nan.  I like her, but she never particularly impressed me.  I got an impression she was inclined to whine a bit.

Gosh, I’m beginning to get fat again.

Be sure to see the Gerrities.  They think an awful lot of you.

So Burt is in England.  I sort of figured his trip here was a farewell one.  Did he send any of the pics he took?

That’s about it.  Cy.
