1939 November 15 Safely in Texas despite car troubles

Darling:
This will probably be the last letter I’ll be able to write for several days. It is about a two hour drive to Randolph and then the fun will begin.
The boys got the bright idea of driving over to Shreveport by way of an Arkansas “improved road”. I told them not to, but they knew better. It consumed two hours and about shook the pants off of us. Later on the generator cut out and we stopped in Henderson to get it fixed. Net result, yours truly had to show the damned garage man what to do. It then worked ok, and we headed south. About an hour later it cut out again and I said it needed fan belt tightening. We stopped at another place where the guy knew his onions, or generators, and we got soaked for $2 for tightening the fan belt and putting in 15 cents worth of material! But the fellows were happy, so to hell with it. After driving 20 miles past where we stopped to get the gen. fixed, Fleet* remembered that he had left his wallet in a hamburger joint. So we went back and got it.
Just to make things nice, it rained like hell, and we ran out of gas. At 12 PM we pulled into a tourist cabin set-up which was swell and spent a quiet night.
Contrary to the tone of the above letter I feel swell & am having a good time. Incidentally, I’m writing in the car which the mechanic adjust the brakes and forty other things.
It was very lonesome in the cabin last night. I couldn’t forget a mental picture of my darling which I acquired one evening about a week ago. Honey, you are very precious to me and I hope we will be able to go ahead in the next six months.
Lots of love, precious. Cy.
