1939 August 6 Passed the physical & ready for training

August something

Darling:

Got your letter this noon.  Well, here goes.  Sorry I haven’t written more frequently.

The physical exam was at Mitchell Field Long Island, which is the Big Army Air Corps base in this area.  I passed it ok.

Operations, Mitchel Field Long Island, NY

Spent the past two days at the cabin.  Called local recruiting office this a.m. and they said they had my papers.

Haven’t talked to RCA yet, but shall try to leave them on good terms.

Hold tight, toots, for this is a surprise even to me.  The new system trains students for three months a “civilian schools”, and then gives them nine months in Texas.  First indications were that I would go to Tulsa, Okla.  Then they changed it to Mobile, Ala.  Got written notice this a.m. that it would be—now don’t faint—Glenview, Illinois!  Of course, I won’t get much time off, but it won’t be six months between times like it is now.  Now is that better than coming out here.

Everyone here is terribly disappointed that they can’t see you, but we’ll make the rounds later on.  I shall have a year in training, during which time I can’t get married, and then three years in the service, during which time I can get hitched.

So, Darling, having a million things to do, I am going to sign off.  There is a bare chance that I may stay here after talking to the RCA and the recruiting office again, but it is a slim one.  I shall probably leave about Wednesday.  I am to report at Glenview on the 14th August.  So unless something happens, I’ll see you by this time next week.  I’ll send a telegram to let you know arrival time.

DON’T tell the folks.  I don’t want to get them upset or excited until everything is all over.   If there is any question, they will worry.  If it is all decided, they will feel fine.

Well, Toots, we finally did it.  That’s the only way this bird will ever sprout wings.  Time to get moving.

Lots of love for the sweetest little thing in the world,  Cy.
