PART II:  A CALL TO SERVICE–AMERICA PREPARES FOR WAR

8/2/39

Darling Girl:

Can’t type because another guy is sleeping in the front room.

I spent the week-end at the cabin.  Came home wet, but sober.  A couple of kids got high and tossed me in.

Monday I flew up to New York for a physical exam.  Doc says I am perfect.  Even both eyes came out 20/20.

Monday night I spent with John in Hartford.  Tuesday I took an eight or ten mile hike in the hills before lunch.

JH has a swell set-up.  We both still love you.

Darling, hold tight.  I may have to ask you to change your vacation plans, so be prepared.  I shall do everything to see you.  Something grand is about to occur.

More later when I know more.

Your dizzy boy-friend,  Cy.

XXX+! And how.

Editor’s note:  Also on August 2, 1939, Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard delivered a famous letter to President Roosevelt, informing him of recent developments in nuclear fission and the potential use of this technology for a bomb.
